Butylene Glycol

Butylene Glycol

Origin: Prepared by catalytic hydrogenation of aldol in the presence of hydrogen and a hydrogenation catalyst.

Also Known As:

1,3 butylene glycol

1,3-butanediol

Overview: Butylene Glycol is a water soluble, organic, and multipurpose alcohol that helps prevent the assimilation of water from high humidity atmospheres into film-forming preparations. It also prevents the crystallization of insoluble components in formulations. It serves as a humectant, solvent, antimicrobial agent, and emollient.

It improves the moisture and emolliency of leave-on and rinse-off formulations, stabilizes compounds such as fragrances and flavors, and provides antimicrobial activity against bacteria, molds, and yeasts when used at a concentration of 8% to 10%.

Suggested Uses:

  • Serums
  • Creams and lotions
  • Hair care products
  • Color cosmetics

Ideal Concentration Level in Products: 1% to 10%
