Skin Care Rules for Oily Skin

Rule No. 1: Know that Oil is NOT the Enemy

It can be tempting to think that sebum is the bane of your existence when you have to go through multiple packets of oil blotting sheets every time, But this cannot be further from the truth.

Oil on your skin is not the enemy. If your skin produces too much oil, it can mean you’re doing something that aggravates it. Going after oil like a madwoman with acne cleansers, alcohol-based toners, and acid exfoliants can irritate and dry out your skin. 

When your skin is stripped of its natural oils, it actually produces more oil which makes you look shinier and causes even more breakouts.

The skin’s sebum production is affected by a number of factors including hormones, genetics, climate, and stress. So instead of slathering products promise to cut the greasiness on your face, think about your current lifestyle and make adjustments there.

Rule No. 2: Be Mindful About Skin Care Ingredients

If you have oily skin, you need to be careful about the products you slather on your face. Some ingredients can cause your skin to produce even more oil which can clog your pores even more.

Avoid mineral oils which can clog the pores; alcohol which can dry out the skin; and harsh scrubs that can strip the skin of its natural oils.

Instead, go for products that contain clay which helps. absorb excess oils and purify your pores. Glycolic acid is also heaven-sent for oily skin. It reduces oil production and helps clear out the pores to prevent breakouts. 

Rule No. 3: Prevent Pore Clogging 

People with oily skin are more likely to have clogged pores than other skin types. To prevent dirt and oil buildup in your pores, you can try double cleansing daily. Start by using an oil0based cleanser that will help remove traces of dirt and makeup without drying the skin. Follow this up with a water0based cleanser that can remove any remaining residue from your skin.

Regular exfoliation is also important when you have oily skin as it keeps the pores clear. But instead of using harsh scrubs that physically slough off dead skin cells, try using a chemical exfoliant like a BHA. It reaches deep into the pores to get rid of dead skin and impurities leaving you fresh-faced.

Rule No. 4: Keep Your Skin’s Oil-Water Balance

It sounds counter-intuitive but dehydration can cause your skin to secrete more oil. This is because when your skin is too dry, your sebaceous glands take this as a sign. That your skin needs oil to stay moisturized.

Choose water or gel-based moisturizer that can hydrate your skin without leaving a heavy and greasy feeling. Be sure as well to stay hydrated all day. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water a day to keep your skin properly nourished with moisture from within.

You can also try using facial oils to keep your skin balanced. Rosehip oil, jojoba oil, and grape seed oil are excellent for keeping the skin’s oil production at bay while reducing the chances of pore-clogging and acne.

Rule No. 5: Don’t Forget Sunscreen

The sun’s rays don’t only cause premature signs of aging like dark spots and fine lines but it can also disrupt your skin’s sebum production. Overexposure to the sun will cause your skin to dry out. This prompts your oil glands to produce more oil to keep the skin lubricated.

For oily skin types, choose a mineral sunscreen that can absorb into the skin quickly. You can also go for a powder-based sunscreen to help absorb excess oils through the day or a lotion sunscreen that dries matte to keep your skin looking fresh.
